HOME
Prepare Your Heating System
When it’s frigid outside, your heating system has to work extra hard. Make sure your filter has been recently changed and keep the temperature at about 68 degrees during the day and night. Keeping your home at the same temperature will reduce the strain on the system and protect your pipes from freezing. If you notice that your home is getting colder and struggling to maintain a comfortable temperature, call an HVAC technician right away.
Winterize Water Connections
If you have not already, make sure to remove any garden hoses that may be connected to outdoor spigots and allow any water to drain out. On the inside of your home, open the cabinet doors under sinks and make sure that areas with exposed pipes are being sufficiently heated.
Other tips:
- Reverse ceiling fans so warm air is pushed downwards.
- Move furniture off of heating vents.
- Insulate your water heater.
- Open your curtains during the day to let the sun in and close them at night to keep the heat in.
- Never use an oven or stove (and be very cautious when using a space heater) to warm your home, this is a major fire hazard.
- Make sure your fire and smoke alarms are operating correctly.
